Hearing VOICES in Carnegie Hall?

YES!!!

VOICES Chorale returned to the Carnegie Hall stage in New York City with a performance of Jubilate under the baton of composer Bob Chilcott on November 20. The chorale was enthralled by the British musician’s demonstration of phrasing for meaning and the gentleness of his voice in conveying his performance intentions for the composition. Choristers from London, New York and New Orleans joined VOICES Chorale and the New England Symphonic Ensemble for the performance. This poignant work will be performed locally by the VOICES on May 12 and 13 in our own spring concert series.

The program featured Jubilate by Bob Chilcott (who also conducted the concert with Miklos Takacz), G.F. Handel's Coronation Anthem #2, "The King Shall Rejoice" and Mozart's Requiem.

We hope you enjoyed "autumn in New York" with the sounds of VOICES!

Our Holiday Festival of Candles and Carols...

Our beloved family-oriented, sing-along holiday concerts in December have a new name, new (and some very old) music, featured soloists Rochelle Ellis and Matthew Shaw and a new ambience of harp, cello, percussion and organ.

We invite you join us for our three performances:

Sunday, December 11, 3:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Southampton, PA

Friday, December 16, 8:00 p.m. at the Pennington Presbyterian Church, Pennington, NJ

Saturday, December 17, 8:00 p.m. at the Princeton United Methodist Church, Princeton, NJ

The holiday offerings include Svéte tíhiy (Gladsome Light) by Alexandre Gretchaninoff, Bim Bam, a folk song arranged for mixed voices by Shalom Altman, Veni, Veni Emmanuel, arranged by Zoltan Kodaly, and American composer Randol Alan Bass’ Christmas Flourish, which premiered in 1992 with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Matthew ShawMatthew Shaw, baritone, will be the soloist in Fantasia on Christmas Carols, by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Mr. Shaw opened the Carnegie Hall season on September 16 under the baton of Ton Koopman as soloist in Bach’s Cantata BMV 146. He was a finalist in the Chimay International Baroque Singing Competition, and he covered the role of Aeneas in a tour of Dido and Aeneas with the Aix-en-Provence Festival. He sang Italienisches Liederbuch at the Austrian Cultural Forum and made his debut at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center as soloist in Solomon with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

Rochelle EllisRochelle Ellis, soprano, a favorite with VOICES Chorale audiences, will present Mozart’s Laudate Dominum with the chorale and will add a few of her own seasonal favorites to the program. Her Carnegie Hall debut was as soloist for Schubert's Mass in G and Bach’s Cantata 140 with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the Westminster Choir, conducted by Joseph Flummerfelt. Ms. Ellis’ international concert debut was performing the Verdi Requiem with the National Opera of China in Beijing with conductor Lyndon Woodside and the Oratorio Society of New York.

All performers will lend their voices to the closing number, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, arranged by Anita Kerr.

Something old is Bach’s Cantata 196, Der Herr denket an uns, written for a wedding in 1708.
Something new is Wedding Cantata by Daniel Pinkham, written in 1959 using text taken from the Song of Solomon that is a rich and sensual love song.
Something borrowed is the mass Se le Face ay Pale, which Guillaume Dufay (c.1400-1474) ”borrowed” from his earlier chanson of the same title.
Something blue comprises a medley of popular songs put together by Westminster Choir College faculty member Jay Kawarsky.

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue..."

What wedding is complete without the bride and groom’s dance inspired by Strauss? The Liebeslieder Waltzes by Johannes Brahms are delightfully flirtatious. And, Who is Sylvia? is answered in the inimitable manner of P.D.Q. Bach.
