The VOICES Chorale and chamber orchestra present music from Russia and France written in the late 19th and early 20th century. The centerpiece of the program is the Fauré Requiem.
“From St. Petersburg to Paris” features choral music written prior to and just after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Censored Russian Orthodox works, including excerpts from Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil and Tchaikovsky’s Cherubic Hymn, open the program. Secular songs and folk music from old Russia are also on the program, featuring a trio of VOICES singers Marina Kogan, Marina Pushkareva and Natasha Isachenko accompanied by accordionist Alexander Zagorodnev. Music of Paris performed during same period provides contrast--Gabriel Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine and his Requiem, with Richard Bozic, baritone soloist. Among the musicians who emigrated to Paris was Stravinsky, who satisfied the Parisian public and the choreographer Diaghilev with music of exotic, pan-Asian flavor. Excerpts from the Stravinsky’s ballet, Les Noces (The Wedding) with Jennifer Brader, soloist, will be performed by the chamber chorus, Sotto Voce.

Those who participated in our Young Composers concert series might be interested to know that Fauré was certainly in the age group of our young composers when he found a harmonium in the chapel of his father’s school and started improvising extensively on the instrument. He was perhaps eight at the time. A knowledgeable person who heard him play suggested to his parents that he get formal music instruction, and by age nine he was sent to study in Paris, all expenses paid. |
