Singers
and music lovers,
I so
hope you will join us in Hopewell on Thursday, August 7, for the Haydn
Theresa Mass. This is one of Haydns great 6 masses,
written late in his life, at the height of his compositional power. If you
listen to this mass, even a little, I think you will become as enamored with it
as I amthe contrasts between sections, the rich, contrapuntal choral
parts, the variety of moodsdark and brooding, jubilant, bouncy, elegant
and refined, bel canto melodies, orchestral exclamations, quarter note music
that really sings. Reallythe history of Haydns rich legacy is
summarized in this piece. If you liked singing Haydns Lord Nelson Mass,
or the Seasons, or the Creationthen I hope you will find this one
enthralling.
I heard
the bass soloist last week, Grant Mech, and his resonance shook the house. A
recent graduate of Westminster, he really can manage the runs and sustained
singing. Other soloists including Marie Tavianini, from Delaware Valley
College, Peter deMets, tenor, and Georgiana Askoff, mezzo-soprano, all equally
outstanding.
Conductors are Bill Alford of Pennington Presbyterian Church
and the Hopewell Valley Youth Chorale; Steve Brennfleck, tenor and conductor,
who teaches at DeSales, Jay Kawarsky and myself. Our accompanist is Cris
Frisco.

VOICES was founded in 1987
to provide outstanding performances of new and classical music and to interest
children in composing and singing. VOICES Chorale, an auditioned chorus with
members from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, was founded in 1992 to provide
outstanding performance opportunities for community singers. (See
A Short History of VOICES.) The Chorale performs an
unusually varied repertoire, including
choral masterworks and premieres by American composers. Our Music Director is
Dr. Lyn Ransom and Timothy
Brown is our Principal Accompanist.
VOICES rehearsing at Music Together, Hopewell,

VOICES performs six to
eight formal concerts and several
outreach concerts each year in Mercer County, New
Jersey and Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The group also occasionally performs in
New York City and tours internationally, with our most recent tour, to
Bavaria and northern Italy, in the
spring of 2007. Our current membership is over 60 singers, including a 28
member chamber ensemble called Sotto Voce. We usually rehearse Monday nights
from 7:30-9:45 pm at locations which are a short drive from Princeton, Trenton
or Bucks County, PA. This year, we are rehearsing at
Music Together in Hopewell, New
Jersey.
VOICES also has a variety of programs of interest
for: children and their

VOICES invites new and
returning members to join us for our spring concerts!
Are you too
busy to sing? Our members find our rehearsals and performances to be a
special time for ourselves. Making music together, even in its most energetic
moments, creates an "oasis of spirit" which we take with us for days; it
re-energizes us and re-focuses us on enjoying and valuing the things that are
most important in life.
"Come sing with VOICES!" |

VOICES welcomes new members
through auditions scheduled by appointment throughout the year. In addition to
singing the world's great choral literature, VOICES offers singers an
opportunity to learn about vocal technique, music history and performance style
in music. The chorale, under the direction of Dr. Lyn Ransom, attracts serious
amateur musicians from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The music ranges from
Renaissance to contemporary -- from spirituals and show music to the sacred and
classic. If you love a musical challenge, this is where you belong! Interested
singers should call call or email Sandy Duffy, Voices Chorale Audition
Coordinator (609) 799-2211 or auditions@voiceschorale.org to
schedule an audition. |
